Merry Christmas! And: some presents

Posted at: 2024-12-25 12:14:44

According to a traditional Polish Christmas belief, on Christmas Eve at midnight animals can talk.

This is one of the reasons why this was a very good time to share a video of this song, Drain Fly. If a drain fly could talk, what would she say to us?

Perhaps this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWgtrdWpCto

Lyrics:

When God created Earth,
He took some leftovers
And He recycled.
From different bits that were left
He made a grey insect,
Wings in a triangle.

He said hello to me,
He asked me where I’d live,
I said: what’s left?
Everything has a place,
Let no waste go to waste,
I’ll live in dirt.

I am the drain fly.
Nobody likes me.
I’m an intruder to you.

I’m nowhere welcome.
Nobody calls me
Beautiful.

Of all the space in the world
There’s so little that I want,
So little I need.
Give me where it’s damp and dank,
A corner of sewage pipe
Is heaven to me.

Let me call it my home,
Let me be born there and grow,
And eat, and breathe.
And when my wings get strong,
I might come visit your home,
Don’t mind me.

I am a drain fly.
Nobody wants me
On their bathroom wall.

I am so little,
I hurt nobody,
But they want me gone.

When God created Earth,
He took some bits that were left
And then He made me.
I’m thankful for all life gives,
Thankful for my grey wings,
I hide and seek.

I hide from everyone big,
I seek the safe damp stink
And I am me.

I am a drain fly.

The video was filmed at my latest show, at Galeria Wzgórze in Bielsko-Biała.

Here is another video from the same evening, Lucky Sparrow:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syU3R9r1RSo

Lyrics:

Oh, wonderful life full of surprises,
Bittersweets of fate so divine.
When you see me smile you think I’m happy,
When you look away, I think you’re fine.

How easy to drown in your brown eyes
While I let you swim in my green-blue.
What is it you say when your heartbeat
Walks away to drum away from you?

Lucky sparrow found your window
When you were in bed.
Lucky shadow fell on your lips
And kissed you instead.

Why is it you find what you’re missing
With your suitcase packed, taxi waiting;
When your life is furnished with answers
To requests you made when you were so green?

And now are you living or acting
And how many roles can you bear?
All the lines and moves memorising
Until you forget that you’re even there?

Lucky sparrow found your window
When you were in bed.
Lucky shadow saw another
Hiding in your head.

Lucky sparrow found your window
While you were sleeping in
And it told you of this love song
Before I could begin.

Both of these songs are on my live album recorded at Katubaari Axu which is on Bandcamp: https://catself.bandcamp.com/album/catself-at-katubaari-axu-vol-1

And here is another gift: my complete performance at Zaal 100 in Amsterdam last November, filmed by poet, singer-songwriter and translator Depipro from Amsterdam from the venue’s balcony and shared on his channel.

Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DDjRhIoL8k
Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXFEm-f3oOs
Part 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-vUGtV8ehY

This is how I sound after driving for 16 hours, then walking for 3 with the guitars and gear and other luggage (please don’t do it. A hike with a heavy, but well fitting rucksack is one thing and a march with several awkward things just before performing is another. It is very bad for your back, and for the performance as well. Next time I must be careful not to forget my Dutch public transport chargeable ticket at home. Then my walks with instruments and gear will be a bit shorter).

I hope you will enjoy these little surprises.

I wish you a relaxed and joyful Christmas time!

Performance at AAVA2024

Posted at: 2024-09-16 11:43:19

On 21st September (Saturday) I will perform at AAVA art exhibition/festival, organised already for the fourth time on the Porkkala peninsula by Pursu ry. At AAVA, works of art are displayed in a natural setting, along the hiking trail of Porkkala.

I took part in the festival for the first time last year when I played a set of my songs at the end of the hiking trail. Among others, I played this song inspired by AAVA which I had written the night before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaZNA8oY61U

This time I will perform songs which I wrote especially for this event, for a short audience-inclusive play of Loviisa Lassila and her alter ego Polina Wolfgang. The songs will tell the story of the play and serve as the soundtrack. The play moves around the themes of the relationship between the human and wild nature, the wild nature in the human and the relationship between nature, the wilderness and wildness in art.

The play is about 20 minutes long and will be shown at 3 pm, 4 pm and 5 pm.

In this video, Loviisa talks about the project:

Catself live album!

Posted at: 2024-04-05 14:25:36

On 8th March, Catself played at music bar
Katubaari Axu in Tampere, where she performs regularly.

She recorded the performance and the recording was too good not to share.

Out of over 20 songs, she chose 10 and the live album is now available on Bandcamp.

Welcome to listen and perhaps add it to your music collection, or get it for someone as a gift!

Catself is one of the most professional singers that I ever met. A real stage personality, always prepared, with catchy songs, a beautiful, somewhat Celtic voice and great guitar and piano skills. She is a singer-songwriter who always brings a good atmosphere to the places where she performs. She has the right attitude towards the music and the audience. Being an artist is top sport, and Catself knows that!
